Principal Conductor of Teatro Municipal de Santiago de Chile Konstantin Chudovsky is a young multiple award-winning Russian opera, ballet and symphony conductor. In 2011 the Financial Times Magazine mentioned him among 25 Russians to watch: “Young conductor Konstantin Chudovsky is one of the country’s movers and shakers.” The magazine El Mercurio praised Chudovsky for his extraordinary conducting abilities in opera where “without score, he elaborated every vocal and instrumental detail, was subtle even in the most exuberant sound expression, distinguished musical frames and kept an absolute correlation with the regie. Just remarkable.” Speaking six languages fluently (Russian, English, German, Italian, Spanish, and French) has enabled him to master a wide operatic repertoire, and his extraordinary musical memory allows him to conduct music by heart without consulting a full score.
Recent highlights include the opening of the Youth Programme of the Theater an der Wien with a production of Rossini’s La cambiale di matrimonio with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra at the Vienna Kammeroper, followed by a successful production of the ballet La Cenerentola. In 2014 Chudovsky was conducting Il Trovatore in Limoges and Cinderella at the Opera de Lyon. In March 2016 he debuted with the State Academic Symphony Orchestra (E. Svetlanov Orchestra) and was re-invited by the Ekaterinburg State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre to lead the productions of Verdi’s Rigolettoand Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. In the season 2017/2018 he will follow a re-invitation of the Opera de Lyon to conduct the Cinderella Ballet during a tour of Oman.
In 2002, Konstantin Chudovsky became a prize-winner of the All-Russia Contest of Pianists while still a student, and in 2006 he was invited to the Moscow Helikon-Opera first as a répétiteur and from 2007-2014 as a first guest conductor. In 2007 the Helikon-Opera and Chudovsky were guests at the Festival Castell de Peralada in Spain, at the Strovolos Municipal Theatre Nicosia in Cyprus, and at the Municipal Gardens Theater Limassol with a production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia. The following year they were invited by the Opéra de Massy, France, with a production of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. In 2010 the Helikon-Opera and Chudovsky were guests in Tallinn presenting a program with a symbolic name “A duet of Tallinn and Moscow” where Estonian and Russian soloists performed hits of the world’s opera repertoire from Mozart to Gershwin. In the same year he won the prize of the National Youth Award “Triumph” in the Art and Literature category. In 2011 Konstantin was hailed by the Union of the Critics of Chile for his outstanding performance of Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov,” a production that was recognized as one of the best events of the year. In 2014 Konstantin conducted “Boris Godunov” in Sofia, Bulgaria, winning the highest Bulgarian prize “The Crystal Lyra.”
Konstantin Chudovsky has worked with many renowned orchestras such as Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Israel Symphony Orchestra Rishon LeZion (Orchestra of Tel-Aviv Opera), Jerusalem Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of Theatre de Lyon, Orchestre de Massy, Orchestra of the Estonian National Opera, Russian State Symphony Orchestra (Svetlanov Orchestra), State Symphony Capella of Russia, Moscow City Symphony (Russian Philharmonic), and Orchestra of Kaliningrad Opera Theatre.
His vast repertoire includes operas by F. Poulenc Dialogues de Carmèlites, A. Dvořák Rusalka, A. Borodin Prince Igor (also partly instrumentation by Chudovsky), R. Wagner Das Liebesverbot, G. Bizet Carmen, G. Verdi Aida, Falstaff, Traviata, Nabucco, P. Tchaikovsky Mazepa, Eugene Onegin, M. Mussorgsky Boris Godunov, D. Shostakovich Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, G. Rossini Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Mozart Le Nozze de Figaro, S. Prokofiev Story of a True Hero, The Love for Three Oranges, U. Giordano Siberia, N. Rimsky-Korsakov Mozart and Salieri, The Tsar’s Bride, J. Reise Rasputin, J. Offenbach Les Contes d’Hoffman, J. Strauss Die Fledermaus, A. Berg Lulu, L. Janáček Več Macropulos, D. Chudovsky led productions of a number of ballets, such as Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty, Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, Prokofiev`s Cinderella and Romeo and Julia, Grieg’s Peer Gynt and Kachesov’s Rasputin.
He collaborated with musicians such as Boris Giltburg, Alexei Volodin, Camilla Nylund, Janina Baechle, Alfred Kim, Roberto Scandiuzzi, Tamara Wilson, Elizabeth Matos, Dmytro Popov, Rodion Pogossov, In Sung Sim, Sebastian Catana, Vitaly Biliy, Kenneth Tarver, Joel Prieto, Olga Mykytenko, Evgen Orlov, Annett Fritsch, as well as opera directors Stefan Herheim, Hugo de Ana, Fabio Sparvoli, Pablo Maritano, Dmitry Bertman, and répétiteur Massimiliano Bullo.
Chudovsky studied at the Gnesin State Musical College under the tutelage of Prof. V. Bogdanovskaya and continued his studies at the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory from which he graduated with honours. Among his teachers were the eminent Russian maestros Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Boris Kulikov and Vladimir Ponkin.
Currently Konstantin is sharing his home between Santiago de Chile and Vienna with his wife, soprano Elizaveta Chudovskaya, and their three children.
