Chulpan Khamatova was born on October 1, 1975 (Kazan, Russia) into a family of engineers. She went to the Kazan University special mathematic school. As she finished the school, for several months she studied at the Finance and Economy Institute (Kazan), but then she unexpectedly entered the Kazan Drama school. Following her teachers’ advice, she moved to Moscow to continue her theatrical studies. Thus, she became a student of the GITIS Academy (class of prof. Aleksei Borodin).
She appeared in several theaters in Moscow: the Moon Theatre (Anna Frank’s Diary), Anthon Chekhov’s Theatre, the Central Independent Theatre. In 1998 she was invited to the company of the Moscow Sovremennik Theatre. She debuted in the role of Patricia Hollman in Remarque’s Three Comrades. She also did the role of Irina in Chekhov’s Three Sisters, Katherine in Ostrovsky’s The Storm, Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra, and of Masha in a new version of Chekhov’s Three Sisters (2008), Karamzin’s Poor Liza (2009), Enemies. A Love story by Isaac Bashevis Singer (Sovremennik, 2011), Miss Julie by Strinberg(Theatre of Nations, 2011).
Ch. Khamatova had her first appearance in the film when she was a third year student. She first did a movie part in The Dancer’s Time by Vadim Abdrashitov. But she became a real star after her interpretation of the role of Rita in V.Todorovsky’s The country of the Dead, after which she was acclaimed one of the most talented actresses of the Russian cinema both by the audience and the critics.
By now Ch. Khamatova has played in more than 30 films, such as The Moon Father, Christmas Mysteria, 72 metres, The Greek Holidays, Garpastum, The Sword Bearer, Domovoi, Elisium, Children of the Arbat, Doctor Zhivago, Dostoevsky, as well as in foreign productions of Tuvalu by F.Helmer, England A.von Boris, Good bye, Lenin!, Victor Vogel is the king of advertisement, The Lullaby, etc.
Together with Chulpan Khamatova, Dina Korzun organized a charity action Podari Zhizn (Gift of Life) and the fund under the same name (founded in 2006) to help children with cancer and onco-hematological diseases. Since 2008 she's ben a member of in the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation.
In 2005-2006 she was one of the TV presenters in Podari Zhizn TV programme.
In 2007 she participated and won in the Lednikovy Period project on Channel One.
